The Darkest Passion grants Aeron keeper of Wrath, an opportunity to find some peace and happiness of his own, finally. But will he take it?

Aeron thinks he is content with his life. He has friends and brothers in the other lords. He has sisters too, since some of the lords have married. He has Legion, his beloved demon friend, who he thinks of as a daughter, but is unfortunately in love with him. This little snag in their relationship creates problems for him in The Darkest Passion. Often enough, Legion is chased away from Aeron by the prying eyes of a female angel. While this angers Aeron, it infuriates Legion and she is set for revenge against the interfering angel.

Warrior Angel

Followers of the series already know Olivia, the favorite trainee of Lysander, elite angel of the one true deity. Olivia is a joy-bringer by nature. She finds happiness in bringing peace to the people who need it most. To test her devotion to the war between angels and demons, Olivia is promoted to warrior angel and tasked with punishing Aeron by death. Before she can kill him though, she realizes that Aeron may not be deserving of death; he has a kind heart and good intentions. She finds herself slowly falling for him. However, this means she must also fall from heaven, which strips her of angelic abilities and her immortality.

Aeron, being an immortal, does not understand how humans can live so carefree when death is so near and so unavoidable. Aeron views humans as weak and incapable of truly living, therefore they are undeserving of his affections. In a debate with his good friend Paris, the keeper of Promiscuity, Aeron says, “If you fall in love with one of [the mortals], your might have her for the better part of a century. Maybe, […] but it will be a century spent watching her wither and die” (12). Aeron knows the love of his brothers and sisters and does not see the purpose of a love all his own, especially from a mortal.

Showalter takes these two characters with conflicting views of humanity and of love and develops them through their relationship with one another. Olivia, her pure heart full of the truest love, is taught the pleasures, or moreover the pains, of a worldly existence. Aeron, his cold heart void of all romantic emotion, learns the benefits of forgiveness and is taught that love is worth having, even if only for a moment in time. Legion too, develops into a much more complex character following her own metamorphosis.

Aeron’s Big Decision

Aeron is given a dilemma and a choice: he can save the world by breaking the heart of the only woman in the world who does not deserve his wrath or he can save her by sacrificing his life, which he has grown to value above all else. What he chooses to do though, impacts the entire series.

A Quick Summary

Besides the drama of Aeron’s life, The Darkest Passion shows the third relic of the gods. Gideon, keeper of Lies, is introduced to the woman who promises to complicate his love life. The lords meet the beings who hold the secrets of the artifacts and the readers meet yet another team in search for Pandora’s Box.
